Keep Hawley-Honesdale Beautiful Reminders for Clean Up Events #1 Above all else is SAFETY! ALWAYS wear a reflective vest and/or highly visible colored shirt (fluorescent orange/green/yellow/tie-dye) and work gloves! ●Pick up a “NIFTY NABBER” $19.99 at Home Depot for this and future road cleanups.● Pay attention to all traffic/vehicles as they approach and pass you. When on smaller/narrower shoulders of the road, briefly pause clean up until traffic has passed. ● Always work your way AGAINST traffic. ● “SLOW DOWN” sign person should be far enough ahead of the group and around bends in the road so that drivers have enough time to slow down and be cautious when passing volunteers. ● Pick up visible trash up to 10-20 feet off road or as far off road as is judged to be safe. ● Volunteers should not pick up any hypodermic needles or other hazardous or questionable items; let the group leader know about these items for safe disposal. ● Be sure to DOUBLE-TIE bags securely before leaving them on the shoulder of the road. ● Be sure bags are far enough off the roadway so they won’t get hit by traffic (but also won’t be hidden from PennDOT pick up crews). ● Leave a filled trash bag next to larger/heavier debris items that cannot be bagged so that PennDoT knows it should be picked up as part of your collection effort. ● Wear pants, hats, comfortable shoes/sneakers, sunblock, and insect repellent if the weather warrants it. ● Carry water if possible. Groups should meet at the halfway point of section - more convenient for getting more supplies or other items. ● Reminder for Leaders: please get group pictures of your crew before hitting the road and a final bag count before heading homeward. Pictures during clean up are also suggested. AVOID PICKING UP CIGARETTE BUTTS or you’ll never get finished with the big stuff!
