TAKE ACTION THIS WEEK:

Congress is still in recess until April 26th.  However we are still asking you to make calls this week. Update: The calls are working!  Rep. Bresnahan signed a letter (along with 11 other 'moderate' Republicans) to Speaker Johnson that said they would not vote for a budget reconciliation bill that has steep cuts to Medicaid.  Between the lines: While they are pushing against what they see as overly zealous benefit cuts, these moderate members aren't ruling out some Medicaid reforms as a way of paying for tax cuts. We will keep an eye on the budget resolution process and advise when action is needed but this fight is not done yet!

2. Action: Call Senators Fetterman and McCormick. 

Background: The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act would place the burden on every single American citizen to prove their citizenship when registering to vote or updating their voter registration, chiefly by presenting either a passport or a birth certificate in person. 

Under 18 U.S.C. § 1015, it is already illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and those that break the law can face up to five years in prison. Americans already attest to their citizenship status when registering to vote, and election officials verify their eligibility using federal and state data, including citizenship data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Americans also must already provide their driver’s license number or the last four digits of their social security number when registering to vote. Instead of the government doing its job, the SAVE Act would put the burden on every single American citizen to prove that they can exercise their constitutional right to vote.

More than 140 million U.S. citizens do not possess a passport, and 69 million women who took their spouse’s last name upon marriage would not be able to use their birth certificate to prove their identity. Rural and working class Americans are less likely to have a passport.

The SAVE Act endangers the constitutional rights of all Americans.

First, I know that the House passed the SAVE Act. I am deeply opposed to this bill. It will disenfranchise tens of millions of American citizens—not to mention 69 million married women who took their husband’s last names. All to address a problem that does not exist. I demand that the Senator vote no on this bill.

3. This is a mixed bag, but all pretty self explanatory:  Call our 2 Senators and Rep. Bresnahan

 Hi, I'm a constituent calling from [zip]. My name is ______.

I’m calling for a couple of reasons. First, I understand that the FDA is planning on ending routine food inspections. Seriously? Are we supposed to just take our chances that what we eat won’t sicken or even kill us? Already there has been an unreported outbreak involving romaine lettuce in 15 states. This is outrageous. The Senator/Congressman must oppose these changes and work to keep our food inspection system fully intact.

Second, Pete Hegseth must resign. Now. The news about another Signal leak—this one involving his wife (here is the link if you want more information https://archive.ph/DGx4q)—should be the final straw. We are not safe with him in charge of our national defense. The Senator/Congressman needs to call for Hegseth to go now.

Finally, due process matters. Kilmar Abrego Garcia and others like him must be brought home at once. The constitution applies to everyone or it applies to no one. Thanks.

4. Continue to voice objections over Trumps on again, off again Tariffs.  Congress controls tariffs, they need to take back control.

Action: Call Senators Fetterman and McCormick and Rep. Bresnahan

Script: My name is ____________. I am a constituent from (zip).

I am calling to demand that Congress take back their Tariff Authority from Trump.  Congress needs to override and roll back these off again, on again tariffs that are destroying our economy and my retirement savings.

Once it is introduced in Congress, I expect my Senator/Representative to sign on to the Resolution by Sen. Tim Kaine. This is an important step in re-establishing our Constitutional order and reining in Presidential overreach.

First, I strenuously oppose S.5, the Laken Riley Act. The bill exploits the tragic death of Laken Riley to sow widespread fear of immigrant communities. It’s a stepping stone to mass detention and deportation with no due process. Vote NO.

Also, I want the Senator to vote no on Russ Vought to run the OMB. Vought was a chief architect of Project 2025 and is preparing to implement its awful proposals immediately if allowed to run this department. He wants to remake the federal government into a tool of white Christian nationalism and political revenge for Trump. Vought must not be confirmed as OMB Director. Thanks.

I urge you to vote NO on S. 5 the “Laken Riley Act.” This bill represents a dangerous and cynical use of legislative power, scapegoating immigrants while doing nothing to enhance public safety.

This harmful proposal exploits tragedy to spread false narratives linking immigration to public safety fears. It undermines constitutional protections, disrupts the balance of power between states and the federal government by eroding the doctrine of "standing" in the federal court system, and perpetuates systemic inequities.

The bill would subject immigrants to prolonged, indefinite detention without bond based on mere allegations of petty offenses and gives individual states standing to sue the federal government to undermine the executive branch's federal immigration authority.

The bill provides discriminatory and anti-immigrant state attorneys general the ability to unleash chaos on the immigration system.

While we are hopeful for amendments, such as protections for Dreamers, that may make this bill less damaging, the underlying legislation perpetuates inequities and disproportionately harms Black and brown communities through racial profiling.

I’m counting on you to stand against attacks on our immigrant neighbors and urge you to vote NO on the “Laken Riley Act”.

Robin Skibber, our candidate for the 139th district House of Representatives, and Wayne County Democratic Committee person Margarette Zelon joined the Biden-Harris campaign’s Reproductive Freedom Rally on Courthouse Square with Scranton Mayor Paige Cognetti on June 24th.

Despite the heat (upwards of 90 degrees F), our annual Democratic BBQ saw even more people than anticipated! Well, maybe getting to eat delicious food without the cooking helped bring the crowds.

The Scholarship committee introduced the 2024 Mark Graziado Scholarship winner.

The Host Committee is now over 25 names, which is fantastic and bodes well for Robin's campaign.
